As a business owner, it’s easy to lose sight of your long-term goals while juggling day-to-day tasks. That’s why I meet with my accountability group during the first week of every month. This group of five other CPAs has been a game-changer for me. We’re all in similar growth stages, share common values, and understand the direction we’re taking our businesses.
When we decided to form our group, we set a few ground rules to ensure we stayed on track:
What Is an Accountability Group?
An accountability group is a small network of professionals who meet regularly to discuss goals, challenges, and progress. Here are the guidelines we use to stay productive:
- Confidentiality: What happens in the group stays in the group.
- Transparency: We share our financials every month (it’s the best way to avoid empty claims).
- Structured Meetings: Each meeting is 1.5 hours, with a set format and a rotating moderator.
- Educational Value: The moderator brings a new, actionable topic to teach the group each session.
- Goal-Setting & Feedback: We discuss yearly and monthly goals—what we accomplished, what we didn’t, and why.
The Benefits of Accountability for Business Owners
Accountability groups help prevent business owners from getting stuck in the day-to-day grind. If you’re always focused on immediate tasks, how can you assess whether you’re on the right path—or even recognize when you’re off track?
Having someone hold you accountable makes a world of difference. These sessions push you to:
- Think critically about your goals.
- Set clear, measurable objectives.
- Stay committed to achieving them.
- Gain moral support from like-minded professionals.
It’s a tough but rewarding process. My group isn’t afraid to call me out when I fall short, and that honesty helps me grow.
